Many people I meet in my home town of Gainesville, Florida ask me about my surname. I tell them it's French, and that my forefather, Joseph Cheuvront was born Feb. 2, 1757 in Strasbourg France, and immigrated as a young man to America. He fought the British during the American Revolution, and in 1781 was present at the surrender of Cornwallis.
All Cheuvronts in the United States, to the best of my knowledge, are descendants from old Joseph. This section of my site is dedicated to the Cheuvront family, and I welcome any relatives to send materials to me and I will (probably) post it on this site. I will be adding more content as time permits. The document below is the earliest record of Joseph Cheuvront, and was made at his baptism. The photograph was made by my mom in 1995.

The entry in the center of the page is Joseph's recording, with his father, François Cheuvront's signature at the bottom:

note "pater   - F. Cheuvront" at the bottom of the entry

Even back then, no one could spell the name.

In the center, you can see  François Cheuvront's signature.
Above, in the writing, you can see François with the surname written as "Chevron."  after that "et Nicole,"  Josephs mother.

The misspelling is corrected to the right, in the margin, although it's faded and difficult  to read. "Cheuvront  Josephus."

I plan to add historical information, and other pictures, and interesting links as I acquire them. If you are related and want to send materials, or link with this page, e-mail me.

My Dad, Harlan R. Cheuvront, was a career Navy aviator, from his enlistment at the beginning of World War II, until the mid-1970's.
He was
a "Top Gun," a Squadron Commanding Officer of VA-76, flying the then new A-4 Skyhawk, and a test pilot at Patuxent Naval Air Test Center, in Maryland in the early '60's,
Below is a photograph from 1958. My Dad, third from the left, and his squadron members of VA-76, with his McDonald Douglas A-4 Skyhawk.

Cheuvront FAQ's (feel free to contribute)

Q. How do you pronounce the name?

A. My branch of the family pronounces it "chev´ ron" with a (typically french) silent "t". Others say "chev´ront" with the "t." In early "West Virginnie" the pronounciation "shiv´ ern" has been documented. I'm interested in other variations, if you've heard them.

Q. Is there any record of native Cheuvronts in today's France?

A. I have never heard of any modern Cheuvront's from France, but I hope that there are some. I've often wondered what happened to Joseph's older brother, and his parents, who did not go to America. Any information on this will be greatly appreciated.
